About Us

We are Will and Karen Otton. After years of planning and anticipation we are about to embark on our big adventure to sail around the world. This website is for all of our friends, family and followers to share our journey. We hope you enjoy reading!

We are often asked why we want to do this. We'll try and explain.

Will...

Because I want to...

I learnt to sail as a kid in an opti – like everyone does. From my first day as skipper of my own boat I always wanted to go further, the next beach, the next bay. This lead me to cross the English Channel, then the Irish Sea, then Biscay, then the Atlantic. I have never really got over the urge to head for the horizon.

Because I can...

I have a lifetime of sailing and traveling experience, an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean ticket, five years as a professional sailor, a degree in yacht manufacturing and surveying, seven years project managing racing yacht and production boat builds. I am ready for this.

Because it is time...

This has been a long standing dream but a recent birthday made me consider a number of things. Am I living the way I always hoped? How much longer will I feel as fit and strong as I do now? Isn’t it time for another adventure? Do I spend enough time with my wife? Shouldn’t everything be simpler? What’s it all about? It sounds like a mid life crisis, it probably is! But this is the way I am going to deal with it. Good times ahead.

Karen...

Well I didn't learn to sail in an opti, like everyone does! I took a week long RYA competent crew course in my early twenties at a sailing school in a remote location on the west coast of Scotland. I enjoyed visiting some of the islands in the Hebrides that were only accessible by boat and was captivated with the sense of freedom that came with it.

My first week on the water opened my eyes to a very different world out there to my own. Over the years I built up my experience eventually passing my RYA Yachtmaster Offshore ticket. I've been lucky enough to sail across the Atlantic three times already, but it has long been a dream to sail around the world.

For me this is going to be a slow circumnavigation. I am looking forward to dropping anchor in far away locations, experiencing new cultures, trying new foods and just taking in all that these new places have to offer. Photography is a great interest of mine and I can't wait to capture as much of this adventure that awaits us as I can.

So there you go, that's why we want to do it, but I'm sure we'll expand on this in future posts.
